Question:

How to create temporary disk space on CMS?

Answer:

If you have a sizeable file which is larger than what your CMS minidisk A can hold, it is recommended creating a temporary disk on CMS to house the file temporarily.

1. To create a tempdisk, type:

tempdisk e

on the Ready mode, where e is the character drive assigned for the tempdisk.  Type in the number of cylinders needed for temporary space.  One cylinder approximates half a megabyte.  Be prudent on specifying the size of tempdisk since it will occupy the shared space for other users.

2. To check the status of your tempdisk, type:

q disk

The following screen will show:

In the above screen, all the accessible minidisks are shown, including the tempdisk e (T-193), which has 50 cylinders.  Note that the tempdisk is taking up the shared space for all CMS users.  Prudence in usage is advised. Also, the tempdisk will be released upon logout.   To manually release the diskspace after use, type:

REL diskvolume (det

where diskvolume is the three digit number (e.g. 193) representing the tempdisk and the option (det stands for detaching.
