Question:

Is mainframe version of SPSS gone?  How do I know if I will be affected?

Answer:

We support two versions of SPSS on the mainframe,  SPSS for MVS and SPSS for CMS.   Since SPSS Inc. stops developing SPSS for CMS and making it Y2K-compliant, we have to discontinue support that application beginning October 1, 1999.  For more details please read the August 1999 Benchmarks article by Dr. Philip Baczewski, Associate Director of Academic Computing Services.

However, we will continue to support SPSS for MVS, which has been rendered Y2K-enabled by the company.  For CMS users, please consult our notice to SPSS for CMS users.

Question:

How do I know if I will be affected?

Answer:

If you have JCL (Job Control Language) in your SPSS program, and you type "SUBMIT" to execute the job, you are using SPSS for MVS and you will not be affected by the discontinuation of SPSS for CMS.  However, it is better to convert all SPSS system files into portable file format.  You can safeguard all your data files so they can be used in other platforms.  If you type "SPSS" on the command column to run SPSS programs, you will be affected.  It is recommended you move on to other platforms such as UNIX, MVS or Windows.
