Question:

a.  Are there any freeware statistical applications available for downloading? 
b.  Are there web pages that offer interactive statistical analysis via a web browser?

Answer:

• There are many freeware products available for download over the web.  Two of the more popular programs are R, a freeware S-Plus clone, and Mx, a freeware Windows-based matrix algebra interpreter and structural equation modeling program.  The following is a list of other freeware programs with their associated URLs

• A Guidebook of Statistical Software for the Social and Behavioral Sciences provides a large list of freeware programs, descriptions of the programs' capabilities, and the URLs where the programs can be downloaded.  Following are some links for a selection of the more popular freeware programs.  This list will be consistently updated as more freeware programs become available as well as when companies drop their freeware status.

• In addition, many websites offer interactive statistical analysis that can be accessed via a web browser.  One of the more popular is RWeb.  In addition to being a fully functional version of R, this website has some prewritten scripts that demonstrate such concepts as regression analysis and ANOVA modelling.  Online statistical computing could be an invaluable teaching resource as students could get  hands-on statistical computing experience and be introduced to concepts such as t-tests, regression, and ANOVA in a computing environment without the learning curve that typically accompanies software packages such as SPSS, SAS, and Minitab.
